Preparation

The fun begins! In order to ensure that you have an amazing time, and smooth experience, in this module we will lay the foundations for your work.

Module 1 Highlights:

MODULE 2

Creating the Book Block

This is all about getting the inside of the book created - the book block. You’ll learn to take the individual pages and hand sew them into a strong binding that will last for decades.

Learning to fold and collate the pages into sections or signatures
How to use some basic tools to make the sewing process easier and more consistent.
Developing sewing skills to create a strong binding that will open flat while still remaining firm and strong

MODULE 3

Forwarding

This is one of the most important steps in the bookbinding process and also an area that is often overlooked. Forwarding creates strength in the spine of book which plays a crucial role in its overall design and functionality.

Module Three Highlights:

Discovering different options for end papers and how to attach them.
How to achieve the beautiful, classic rounded spine.
How and why to reinforce the spine of the book

MODULE 4

Creating the Case

Customising a cover to reflect your style and personality is where creativity comes into full play. Whether you are after something that looks like a classic, or a totally out of this world modern and vibrant design, the choice is yours!

In the final module we put it all together. You will finish having created your first hard cover, hand sewn book!

DO I NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?

In Module one Simon will go through how to set up your space. Whilst it can be fun and useful to have some specialised bookbinding tools, this is not a necessity.

Simon will explain and demonstrate substitutes you can use (that you will already own) for all the steps.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE TIME TO COMPLETE THE MODULES EACH WEEK?

Although most students like to work on a module each week, this course is totally self paced. The transcripts & audio for the course are available as downloads for you to keep, plus you have LIFETIME access to the entire course!

CAN I STILL GET HELP IF I CAN'T ATTEND THE LIVE Q & A SESSIONS?
